Contact The Fourth Part of the Day, Farewell Books, Austin, TX
September 5 – October 18, 2015
The sun sets on a face. Crescent-shaped scythes shear the stalks. Through their efforts golden wheat is harvested, signaling the end of Summer. Another season, the body recurs and reiterates its form. A veil falls.
Representations of the body repeat throughout history. Pose and gesture create a language. A flat simulation retaining humanity. These visual records remain long after the lifespan. Presently, the second of a snapshot or the paused vibration of a film still perpetuates images of bodies. A history of repeating. Even bog men preserved become sculptural shells of these lost humans. Through the cycle of life and death, humans grasp at the eternal.
Farewell Books is pleased to present a new body of paintings from Anthony Cudahy. Throughout the work, images are appropriated from a variety of sources, from Rembrandt to Pompeii remnants; the most prominent source being Bruegel’s 1565 painting The Harvesters. Moments from this 16th Century painting cut through, shearing the stalks. The sky is golden. The fourth part of the day is already gone.
Farewell will also be producing an exhibition catalog for the show.
